Huff, Puff and Blow away
Fingers tapping on the desks, eyes meticulously locked on the speaker. Tensions start to rise as the plot thickens in the intellectual arena.Whispers and the occasional muttering as Victor establishes dominance on the podium.
"Those who cannot understand how to put their thoughts on ice should not enter into the heat of debate!!! " (Friedrich Nietzsche)
Well, I'll save you the agony of trying to wrap your head around the aforementioned proceedings. Yesterday marked the much anticipated " Mock" debate conducted by the Multimedia Corporate club.
Oooh pardon me! Where are my manners?
I should probably rephrase that.
Our debaters were oiling up their engines for a shot at the Sharks in a week's time.
Held at the J12 campus lecture hall at exactly 3pm, preparations had been under way for slightly over a week and when it did arrive, offered nothing short of excitement and passion. Notwithstanding the build up to the day, it was properly outlined by the subtlety of which participants chose to exert themselves. There was fire in the eyes of speakers who tabled their thoughts with such pizzazz and eloquence.
In well balanced teams comprising of the proposition (The good guys who always get the girl at the end of the movie) and opposition (the other set of good guys who are on sabbatical, vacation?....Be my guest) tabled arguments for the evolution of communication in the new era age. It laid bare a platform for a fascinating yet perceptive battle of wits and charisma as teams endeavored to outclass one another every step of the way.
Tendeka, in typical mercurial fashion owned the stage vehemently pouring water on Victor's pro-arguments:giving his two piece on the downside of the days' topic. He then proceeded to highlight several key areas of contention in much similar fashion. The proposers were no push overs either as they stood toe to toe with Tendeka and James who aimed to sway the pendulum in their favor much to the amusement of the judges.
Kudos to them for their evenhandness in the face of the well articulated declarations.
Victor did rally the troops for a brief period and had the Wolfpack bemused, shaking their heads in dismay. I was especially keen to note the rise and rise of new speakers in our midst (special props to Sophie and Maina)
A breathe of fresh air as we approach a crucial time in our club activities.
The confidence was slowly catching on as we geared towards the boot camp at St. Paul's University.
Keen not to let the foot off the gas, the speakers addressed sensitive issues including mental health and women empowerment not to mention social media bullying.
I reckon if granted more time, most would have liked to channel their inner President Ruto at the UN General Assembly last month.
In a bid to salvage extra points the judges subsequently opened the floor to the posing of questions from either side as they tried to deal one last blow and give food for thought (Aaaah.. Which reminds me! There were prizes to be won too!.... The three little pigs just had to hold on alittle longer until the big bad wolf ran out of breathe)
Not only did Victor, backed by his able team, pose some intriguing questions to the "watch dogs" but also made a well grounded and versatile case for the utilities of evolution of communication.
His corner derived great pleasure from his parting shot as their gleaming eyes gave an assured moment of victory.
Upon close inspection, it seemed like a dead rubber as the opposition engaged in a buzz session laying foundation for their own counterarguments.
James, the man tasked with the enviable role of steering the ship in this case, completely evaded the proverbial iceberg and once he hit full stride, did not look back once. There was a sense of dejavu. His knack for speaking from the heart did eventually come back to haunt him as he ran out of time to deliver that much needed punchline.
Bummer!
The judges however, had ultimately had enough and after selected words of guidance and pinpointing areas of improvement with commendations to the days' speakers, announced the "Guys on good deeds recess" as eventual winners.
Take nothing away from the proposers who put up a valiant fight but marginally fell short.
As the curtains fell on this one, it was worthy to note that MMU 3C were raring to go and judging by the teamwork and confidence displayed you'd be forgiven for counting them out. The blemishes were areas of betterment but as pointed out by Madam Chair, they have assembled a team that is oozing with collectedness and possess the mettle to bring this one home.
Let's blow away the competition!!!...
-John (MMU 3C)
